About the Scenarios & Methods

Storm Transposition Analysis: Storm transposition shifts an observed historical storm footprint (July 2025 event) across a basin to evaluate hydrologic vulnerabilities and downstream flow peaks under localized alignments.

Scenario Explanations:

  • Scenario A (Historical): July 4, 2025 historical reconstruction calibrated against observed gauges.
  • Scenario C (Shifted): The July 4 rainfall footprint moved toward the divide between the North and South Forks.
  • Scenario D (Expanded): The July 4 rainfall footprint expanded by 20% for a broader-storm stress test.
  • Scenario E (North Fork): The July 4 rainfall footprint moved northwest over the North Fork headwaters.

Reconstructed Map Layers: Depth and velocity layers were reconstructed from accepted HEC-RAS result HDF5 dataset grids. Interpolated via cell-center coordinates using natural neighbors, and masked to the wet depth footprint.

Watertight Flow Extraction: Simulated flows were extracted through cross-sectional shape line faces using the cell-by-cell signed face normal velocity method. Total runoff volume error remains below 0.01%.

Limitations Notice: Depth and velocity viewer rasters were reconstructed from accepted HEC-RAS result HDF data using a consistent method for all scenarios. The reconstructed depth footprint may be smaller than a native HEC-RAS Mapper Horizontal WSEL map because the workflow does not reproduce HEC-RAS Mapper’s horizontal boundary extrapolation.
